Mitzpe Hagit

An Ecological Community

Based on Amana magazine article, Av 5762 (July 2002)

The residents of Mitzpe Hagit (north of Kfar Adumim and Alon) define themselves as an ecological community, mainly due to their emphasis on water reuse. Their "caravans" (temporary housing units) are covered with stone, to blend in better with the natural environment.

"We try to limit as much as possible disturbing the natural lay of the land," explains Hagit Ben-Dor. "We don't prepare lots for building, but rather we build without flattening the mountain. For the same reason, we decided not to set up temporary and permament building areas, but just one area. Whoever builds, builds next to or on top of his caravan."
There are currently 4 families living in Mitzpe Hagit. The residents raise chickens and grow vegetable gardens for personal consumption.
