Yakir
Yakir is a religious settlement in the western Samarian
(Shomron) Mountains, located in the dense Ariel-Elkana-Karnei Shomron-Alfei
Menashe "rectangle" of Jewish settlement. This area is just east of the
Central Region cities of Petach Tikva, Hod Hasharon and Kfar Saba. The
settlement is approximately 25 minutes from both Petach Tikva in the Tel
Aviv-Gush Dan Region and Kfar Saba in the Sharon Region.
Yakir is situated on a mountain ridge overlooking the Kana River gorge,
just across from Karnei Shomron and Ma'ale Shomron; across the road from
Emanuel and Revava, and adjacent to Nofim. The Kana River and gorge is a
nature preserve dotted with numerous natural springs and lush vegetation. In
biblical times the Kana River marked the boundary between the Tribes of Efraim
and Menashe. Yakir enjoys the clean mountain air and green vistas of this
highly desirable region.
Yakir was established in 1981 and named in honor of Israel Air Force pilot Yakir Naveh who remains missing in action (MIA) to this day. Today the settlement consists of over 170 families, many with very young and school age children.
Yakir's shaded streets and playgrounds provide an ideal environment for families with children of all ages. Yakir has several nursery schools and kindergartens; an elementary school; medical clinics, and a library.
The high school age children of Yakir attend the Yeshivah High School for boys in nearby Karnei Shomron and the Ulpana High School for girls in nearby Kedumim. Many of Yakir's young men study and serve in the Israel Defense Forces in the framework of one of the Yeshivot Hesder. A Yeshivat Hesder is located in nearby Karnei Shomron.
The residents of Yakir are committed to maintaining a religious lifestyle. Prospective applicants for Yakir must be religious and economically sound young couples or families with children of all ages who are socially compatible. All applicants must be interviewed and accepted by the Yakir New Residents Committee.
The homes of Yakir are marketed by Amana - Gush Emunim Settlement Movement and the Yakir settlement. Amana is the settlement arm of Gush Emmunim and is responsible for developing and expanding over 100 settlements in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Region.
Families purchasing homes in Yakir are entitled to special mortgages and loans totalling up to $49,000. Of these mortgages and loans, approximately $14,000 are automatically converted into a grant (forgiven) if the family continues to reside in Yakir for 15 years.
