Otniel
Otniel was established in 1983. Today the settlement is the largest and
most developed settlement in the Har Hebron Region, comprising over 70
families and 500 residents. The families of Otniel range in age from
young couples to well-established families. The Yeshivat Hesder and
Kollel of Otniel, and the varied ages and backgrounds of Otniel's residents
combine to provide a particularly rich social, cultural and Torah
environment. Otniel places special emphasis on educational programs for its many
children. The settlement has 4 nursery schools, 2 kindergartens, an
afternoon Talmud Torah and an elementary school; a rich curriculum of
afternoon cultural and educational enrichment programs; and an active
branch of the Bnei Akiva youth movement. The children of Otniel attend
special afternoon educational enrichment classes at the settlement's
modern community center, which includes an advanced computer center.
High School students attend the Yeshiva high school (boys) and the
Ulpana high school (girls) in Kiryat Arba.
Otniel also has its own medical clinic, synagogue, mikveh, mini-market,
community center (with separate facilities for adults and children),
library, playground, sports facilities and swimming pool. The settlement
also hosts the Har Hebron Regional Council and the Har Hebron Religious
Council which provide a broad range of services to the residents of Har
Hebron. Otniel offers its residents a variety of opportunities for employment
on Otniel. Otniel and the settlement support groups make a special effort
to encourage and support private initiatives to establish enterprises in
Otniel. Many residents of Otniel are also employed off the settlement in
Beersheba, Jerusalem and neighboring settlements. The residents of Otniel are committed to maintaining a religious
lifestyle centered around the Yeshivah of Otniel. This Yeshivah Gedolah
is a combination Yeshivat Hesder and Kollel with a total of over 170
students. The students of the Hesder Yeshivah combine advanced Torah
study with their military service in the Israel Defense Forces. The
Kollel students are graduates of the five year Yeshivat Hesder-IDF
program who continue their Torah studies in an intensive and advanced
program. The Yeshivah aims to educate a new generation of Torah scholars with an
in-depth uderstanding of Torah and Halacha, as well as an awareness of the
day to day problems and needs of the communities outside the Yeshivah
world. These Torah scholars are being trained to spread the light of Torah
throughout the land. The new Yeshivah building is the pride of the
community
Following a recent expansion program, Otniel is now ready to consider
applications by religious families of all ages and socio-economic groups.
All applicants must be interviewed and are subject to acceptance and
approval by the Otniel New Residents Committee. The homes of Otniel are marketed by Amana - Gush Emunim Settlement
Movement and the Otniel settlement. Amana is the settlement arm of
Gush Emmunim and is responsible for developing and expanding over 100
settlements in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Region. Families purchasing or building their homes in Otniel are entitled
to special mortgages and loans totalling up to $56,000. Of these
mortgages and loans, approximately $21,000 are automatically converted
into a grant (forgiven) if the family continues to reside in Otniel
for 15 years. The following is a sample of the lots and homes which are currently
offered for sale in Otniel:
